Helen Shim, Dougherty Valley High School alumni, has played the violin for 7 years under Jennifer Ju-Yi Peng. She was the concertmistress of the Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra, which she had been a member of for two years. Helen had also qualified to play for the California All-State Orchestra as a first violinist for two years in a row. She had also placed 3rd place in the Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition and in the United States Open Music Competition as well. Along with her musical experience, Helen also worked for the Taylor Family Foundation for the cause to help children with chronic illnesses in the local area.
